Legacie Blackbird Gains Strength From Her Heritage
“To me personally, being Indigenous is something I am very proud of because I feel that we are very strong, emotionally, physically, and spiritually and we always bring our pride with us everywhere.”
Those are the words of Legacie Blackbird about her heritage.
Blackbird recently finished her first season playing OCAA basketball for the provincial champion Fanshawe College Falcons.
The Walpole Island First Nation product appeared in 17 games for the Falcons this season, averaging 1.7 points per game, and 1.3 rebounds per game, helping her team earn a spot at the National Championships.
Finding her own success on the court, Blackbird hopes other Indigenous athletes see what is possible when they watch her play.
“I hope they see that even from a small community you can still dream of wanting big things and to go after everything,” Blackbird said.
Blackbird is definitely a motivation to those in her community, and other young Indigenous women who are working toward their sport dreams.
