Movement Monday: Creating Dynamic Opposition

Each week, we’ll bring you a new movement to help your body, and mind.

This week we are moving with Body Language, your alternative movement studio in Downtown Chatham.

Body Language’s Simon Swanek teaches us about Dynamic Opposition.

“Dynamic opposition” is about creating conversation. By polarizing our movements with countermovements we can create a new balance. In all of the examples shown I am able to leverage more strength and stability by intentionally making use of dynamic oppositions.

Examples to try:

  • Press down to lengthen up while seated or standing
  • Don’t just sink the heels in down dog, but press through the ball of each foot
  • Try this dancing warrior variation, where the arms reach in opposing directions
