Chatham-Kent Council will discuss repurposing Erickson Arena and Bothwell’s Arena this winter for non-ice sporting activity.

The move would look to remove ice from the arenas in December 2020 to accommodate sports such as pickleball, volleyball, indoor soccer, and ball hockey during the winter months.

Part of the reasoning presented in the report to council, is that Chatham-Kent’s ageing demographic will not be able to travel South this winter due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

All ice bookings at Erickson Arena would be transferred immediately to Thames Campus Arena.

Currently, Chatham-Kent’s 10 arenas are losing $235,867 a month.
