OFSAA Cancels Spring Championships For Second Straight Year

There will be no Ontario high school sports championships this spring, as OFSAA, the governing body for sport in Ontario at the high school level, cancelled spring events.

“While the COVID-19 pandemic remains fluid, OFSAA Executive Council, in collaboration with OFSAA’s Return To Sports Working Group, has determined that the 2021 spring championships and festivals are cancelled.”

The announcement came only days before students across Ontario were set to return to the classroom for in person learning, with the exception of the GTA, which will return February 16.

“Despite this disappointing news, we wish to reiterate our continued support for sports and activity for the benefit of students’ physical and mental well-being. School sports play a vital role in education and in the lives of students,” the OFSAA statement read.

“We know that the coming months present uncertainty, but we eagerly look forward to the time when athletes and coaches can safely return to competition in our provincial championships and festivals!”
