Negri Beats Older Competition To Win Provincial Gold
Blenheim’s Emma Negri is a provincial champion once again, except this time it’s in a new discipline – hammer, and as a under-age athlete in the U16 division.
13-year-old Emma competed in this past weekend’s Athletics Ontario U16 Provincial Championships held in St. Catharines. With a throw of 37.03m, she walked away with the gold medal in the Girls Hammer. This is an event that Emma began training in last summer to add to her other summer events of discus and shot put.
In Saturday’s discus event, she narrowly missed out on the bronze medal and placed a respectable sixth in Sunday’s shot put event.
Negri will continue to train full force this week with University of Windsor Athletics Club (UWAC) throws coach, Denise Hebert, in preparation for the Athletics Ontario U14 West Regional Championships to be held in Hamilton this weekend where she will compete in discus and shot put. Athletics Ontario has moved to a regional championships for the U14 and below age groups, instead of a provincial championship and hammer is not offered at this age group.
