Clayton Shreve Finds New Appreciation For Football, New Success With Lancers
For many athletes, missing a year of competition felt like a setback. For Chatham’s Clayton Shreve, it became an opportunity to step into a bigger role with the University of Windsor Lancers football team, one which he has grabbed and thrived in.
“This season has been one of the most fun for me. The entire team is working hard and playing with a lot of good energy and I think as a team it’s been fun to play together,” Shreve said.
A fourth year human kinetics student, Shreve has always loved being active and competing in sport, and missing a year gave him a new appreciation for the game, and revived motivation.
“Being out all of last season gave me time to appreciate football and how far it has taken me so far, and to be back playing with a great group of guys makes my time on the field a ton of fun,” he explained.
The Lancers themselves are sitting in the middle of the pack, and with the season already across the midway mark, every game counts for the Lancers and Shreve.
“The coaches have been making sure all season that we play smart, we play hard, and we play with a sense of urgency. This week even more so, we see the last third of the season as playoffs and understand that our team needs to play our best football moving forward.”
Playing wide receiver earlier in his career, Shreve has converted to be a defensive back this season, and is making an even bigger impact on the field defensively.
Hopefully for the Lancers and Shreve, those gains translate to team success and a playoff run.
“I’ve had a lot of opportunities this season being on the defensive side of the ball and having a bigger role on special teams, which has allowed me to make plays. The coaches put us in a spot to make plays and that’s what you’re seeing this year.”
