Angela James Gives Wallaceburg An MVP Performance | Black History Month
Angela James was the superstar of women’s hockey in the 1980s and 1990s.
She won four World Championship gold medals with Team Canada in 1990, 1992, 1994, and 1997 and was one of the first two women inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.
Also a member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame, and Order of Canada, James’ legacy is unmatched. This includes as a Black woman in a sport that remains predominantly white today.
In 1982, James accolades included an MVP performance in Wallaceburg as a member of Burlington’s entry into the 16th annual Lipstick Tournament.
James was an upstoppable force throughout the tournament, with Burlington’s only misstep coming in double overtime of the championship game where they fell 2-1 to the Brampton Canadettes. Despite losing the final, the 17-year-old James was named tournament MVP.
