The Chatham Maroons got their win Sunday night the hard way. Midway into the 2nd period the Maroons were trailing by a 3-1 score, and not looking like it was going to be a good night. At the 13:40 mark, the Maroons Connor Dvorak scored to cut the Stars lead to one.

The Stars became undisciplined later in the period and the Maroons were able to score a pair of power play goals. First Liam Doyle scored, at 17:49, followed up by Jaxon Fortier-Smith at 18:50. This put the home team up by one to start the third period.

The third period played out with Chatham trying to hold the lead and the Stars pushing back. St Thomas opted for the extra attacker with over 3 minutes remaining in the game, and the gamble paid off as Nick Houben scored with less than two minutes remaining to force overtime.

Sixteen seconds of 3 on 3 hockey was all it would take for the Maroons to spring Noah Mathieson in alone on Stars goaltender Wyatt Sloetjes. Mathieson chose the deke and slid the puck on the ice between Sloetjes pads for the win. Maroon goaltender Brett Fullerton returned to the line up after be out for a couple weeks with an injury, and had a solid game.

The Maroons travel to London on Wednesday, and return home Sunday night where they will host St Marys.

For the pic: Maroon’s Cameron Graham avoids the stick check of the sliding Stars defender Brenden Cattryse as he closes in on net.
