Maroons double Stars 6-3
Despite a slow start, the Maroons defeated the St. Thomas Stars in a 6-3 decision in Chatham on Saturday afternoon.
The 610 in attendance at Memorial Arena saw the Maroons fall behind 1-0 in the first period. The Stars then took a 2-0 lead by the 8:07 mark of the second with a short-handed goal.
However, the rest of the second frame, along with the the third, belonged to the Maroons.
Chatham got on the game sheet with a power play goal at 14:17 of the second, then tied the contest at the 16:34 mark.
The Maroons out scored the Stars 4-1 in the final frame, including two power play goals. The lone Stars goal of the period came at the 19:33 mark of the game.
The Maroons out shot St. Thomas 55-30.
Chatham’s top point getter of the afternoon was Connor Paronuzzi who had assists on four of the goals.
David Brown had two goals (20) and one assist(19) for the Maroons, while teammate Joel Fonovic also had two goals (15) and one assist (11) for three points each. Noah Mathieson (13) and Owen Sculthorp (11) each had one goal. Julien Gervais had three assists, Brenden McKay (9) had two assists, while Nate Dowling (8) had one.
In 41 games played, Gervais leads the Maroons in scoring with 21 goals and 37 assists.
Maroons goaltender Fullarton stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced. With the victory, Fullerton’s record improves to 10 wins, six losses, and one overtime loss.
The Maroons are now 22 wins, 18 losses, two overtime losses, and two shootout losses on the season for 48 points. The win keeps the Maroons tied with the Rockets for fifth place. Chatham has played 44 games while the Rockets have played 46.
With six games remaining, the Maroons play the back end of a home and home against the Stars next Friday night in St. Thomas.
