Maroons fail to sweep home and home series vs Flyers
The Chatham Maroons dropped a 3-1 decision to the Flyers on Thursday night in Leamington.
The Flyers scored three goals in the first period, including a shorthanded marker. Chatham goalkeeper Brett Fullerton stopped 12 shots while Flyers goaltender Bryce Walcarius, who the Maroons chased in the first period of Sunday’s game, stopped all 10 shots he faced in the first frame.
With Blain Bacik in the penalty box, Brendan Gouin (9) scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 2:09 of the second to cut the lead to two. Fullarton stopped all 14 of the Flyers’ shots in the second while the Maroons managed only four shots on the Leamington’s Walcarius.
Even though the Maroons outshot the Flyers 13-4 in the third, they couldn’t draw any closer. The final shots on goal were Leamington 30 and Chatham 27.
With the victory, the Flyers move into first place in the Western Ontario Conference of the GOJHL.
The Maroons remain tied for fifth place with the Rockets, however, Chatham has two games in hand.
The Maroons (46 pts) will host the St. Thomas Stars (42 pts) on Saturday, February 11 at the Chatham Memorial Arena. Puck drop is at 2 p.m.
