Maroons take two of three on Family Day weekend
The Chatham Maroons topped the St. Thomas Stars and London Nationals over the long weekend but failed to make it three in a row, falling to the Kings in Komoka on Family Day.
The Maroons beat the Stars in St. Thomas Friday night 6-4 outshooting their opponents 51-22. Brett Fullarton got the win in goal.
David Brown had two goals along with an assist while Liam Doyle added two goals. Single markers went to Brayden Degelas and Owen Kalp.
Connor Paronuzzi and Julien Gervais had two assists each while Noah Mathieson, Nate Dowling, Joel Fonovic, Brendan Gouin, and Brenden McKay each picked up single assists.
Sunday, the Maroons hosted the Nationals in their second last regular season home game and came away with their third victory in a row, outscoring London 8-5.
Luka Dobrich started between the pipes for the Maroons turning in a strong performance. He stopped 24 of the 29 shots directed at him to pick up the win. Chatham had 30 shots for the game.
The Maroons led the Nationals 2-1 after one period. The Nationals went into the third leading 4-3 but the final period belonged to the Maroons who outscored London 5-1.
Brown had two goals and an assist, Elston Rorey had another two goals, while Paronuzzi and Gervais had one goal and three assists each. Mathieson and Fonovic both had one goal. Doyle had two assists while Joshua Lepain, Matthew Cunningham, Degelas and Kalp had single assists.
The Maroons had no time to celebrate their third victory in a row, having to be on the ice in Komoka for a matinee match-up with the Kings on Monday.
The Kings lead 1-0 at the end of the first frame and 5-0 after two. The Maroons managed to get on the board in the third, but the game ended 6-1 for Komoka.
Fullarton was on the hook for the loss, facing 45 Komoka shots, while the Maroons had 32 shots.
Paronuzzi had the lone marker for Chatham with Brown and Kalp picking up the assists.
Gervais, who leads the Maroons in scoring with 64 points (24 goals and 44 assists), has been moved into sixth place on the GOJHL leaderboard. He trails St. Catharines’ Blake Yetman and Kitchener-Warterloo’s Jacob McEachern who both have 68 points.
Brown is second in team scoring with 47 points (24 goals and 23 assists).
Doyle leads all Chatham rookies with 13 goals and 31 assists for 44 points. He currently sits third overall in team scoring and is in ninth spot in GOJHL Rookie Scoring. He trails Strathroy’s Ethan Facchina by one point and LaSalle’s Cole Davis by two points.
The Maroons, who currently sit in fifth place, are back in action on Thursday, February 23 when they travel to LaSalle to take on the fourth-place Vipers. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. at the Vollmer Culture Recreation Complex.
