Wallaceburg native named Female Athlete of the Year

Wallaceburg native Shona Branton has been named Western University’s Female Athlete of the Year for 2023.

Branton finished first in the Ontario University Association (OUA) in the 50 breaststroke and first in U SPORTS in the 100 breaststroke.

She also finished fifth and fourth in the OUA and U SPORTS in the 200 breaststroke respectively, and second in the OUA in the 4×100 Medley Relay and 4×50 Medley Relay.

Branton was also awarded First Team All-Star in the OUA and First Team All-Canadian by U SPORTS for her achievements.

The Female Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to a female student-athlete who has achieved outstanding success representing Western at the provincial or national level in the season.

The other nominees for the award were Janelle Albert, Women’s Volleyball and Sophie Coutts, Cross-Country and Track & Field.
