Wallaceburg PJHL team moving to Walpole Island

Wallaceburg’s PJHL team is on the move but they’re not going far.

The ownership group announced on social media Tuesday night that the team will be moving to Walpole Island next season and rebranding as the Walpole Island Wild.

This is the latest rebrand for the Jr. C squad which switched from the Lakers to the Thunderhawks in 2019 amid rumours the owners were considering moving the team from Wallaceburg to Tilbury.

The team has undergone several ownership changes over the years as well, most recently being purchased by Walpole Island First Nation in July 2022.

The First Nation community was home to a dominant Junior C team in the 1990s known as the Walpole Island Hawks.

The Wallaceburg Thunderhawks finished the regular season in eighth place in the Stobbs Division and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

The team will be holding a prospect camp on April 29 at Thames Campus Arena in Chatham as it lays the groundwork for the 2023-24 season.
