Hockey players honour teammate

When the Wheatley Omstead Sharks and Amherstburg Admirals played last night in Wheatley, they played with heavy hearts.

Players joined together to mourn and honour Sylvain Lessard. Lessard, 20, died in a crash on Tuesday night. He played last season and the beginning of this season with Wheatley. He recently moved on to play with the Lakeshore Canadiens.

Wheatley honoured Lessard by hanging up his number 11 jersey and wearing arm bands with Lessard’s number on it.

The hockey world in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent is small.
With junior hockey, high school hockey, summer camps, spring hockey, workout sessions and tryouts—most hockey players are familiar with each.

It’s likely that the majority of Amherstburg’s players have either played with or against Lessard and knew him well.

Notes:
The two teams were tied at 1-1 after one period. If you add the final 9-2 score together you get 11. Wheatley outshot Amherstburg 38-27—a difference of 11.
