Wammes wins team gold at Pan Ams
Bothwell’s Nick Wammes rode to gold Day 4 of the Pan Am Games in Santiago Chile on Tuesday.
Team Canada sprinted to gold in the men’s team sprint event, defeating Colombia in the head-to-head track cycling showdown by 0.025 of a second.
Racing for Canada along with Wammes was Tyler Rorke, and James Hedgcock, who clocked 43.396 seconds.
Wammes, who turned 24 earlier this week, notes that the Olympics are only 10 months away.
“It seems like whenever we race together, we keep getting faster and better as a team,” Wammes said in an interview on the Canadian Olympic website.
“We matched our best time all season and we’re in a heavily trained state, so we’re getting stronger and looking forward to next season.”
Wammes was scheduled to be back on the track Wednesday for the individual sprint.
This is Wammes’ second Pan Am games, as he competed in 2019 in Lima Peru. He made his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 where he competed in the sprint and the keirin.
