Maroons comeback against St. Mary’s falls short

The Chatham Maroons put up quite a fight but fell 3-2 to the St. Mary’s Lincolns on Sunday night at the Chatham Memorial Arena.

Down 3-1 late in the third period, the Maroons pulled their goalie with over three minutes left to attempt to get back into the game. Josh Cleary scored with 46 seconds left to get the Maroons within a goal.

It appeared the Maroons scored the game-tying goal with 22 seconds remaining, but the referee waved off the goal saying it was directed into the net by a Chatham skate.

Braeden Burke opened the scoring, knocking in a rebound in the first period to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead.

The Maroons played the game four players short, as a number of players are battling an illness. Captain Blain Bacik was sitting out the first game of a three game suspension, for a fight he was involved in during a game against St. Thomas on Friday.

The Maroons (26-20-2-1), will finish off their regular-season with a home game against the LaSalle Vipers on March 3.

The final game will be a preview of a Western Conference first-round playoff series, with LaSalle holding home-ice advantage.
