Red Devils host Windsor in exhibition on Sunday

A lot is going on for the Wallaceburg Red Devils junior B lacrosse team this weekend as they prepare for their upcoming regular season opener on April 20.

On Saturday, the Red Devils host their annual Chili Cookoff at the CBD Club. It runs from 1-3 p.m. and admission is $5. After the cookoff, the Red Devils are playing an alumni game at Wallaceburg Memorial Arena at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, the Red Devils will host an exhibition game at 6 p.m. against the rival Windsor Clippers at Wallaceburg Memorial Arena.

Red Devils general manager Tye Belanger said the team has been getting ready for the past couple of months.

“A lot of young faces,” said Belanger on this year’s roster. “Super talented though, but we’re young with a lot of local kids and definitely a pretty bright future to look forward to.”

St. Catharines native Mike Lines will be the Red Devils’ head coach. Lines has a wealth of experience, coaching Junior A and B lacrosse, as well as a few years coaching professional lacrosse with the Minnesota Swarm.

“This guy has won a couple national championships as a player and coach. …we’ve got a nice talented coach and a young team, so great future ahead,” Belanger said.

The Red Devils finished with a 5-15 record in 2023.

The home opener for the Red Devils will be on April 20, when the Red Devils host Welland. A big crowd is expected, as the Red Devils will retire former player Matt Cousins’ number 72.

Cousins, who played five years with the Red Devils, was a heart-and-soul player for Wallaceburg. He died in a car crash in May of 2023.
