Ursuline girls rugby team has success at Guelph tournament
In what has been a strong year for athletics at Ursuline College Chatham, you can add another team from the school that is among the province’s best.
The Ursuline Lancers senior girls rugby team showed they are among Ontario’s elite teams by winning their pool at the Centennial Collegiate and Vocational Institute Spartan Rugby Cup in Guelph on May 2.
The tournament is one of the toughest in the province with 20 girls rugby teams from across the province.
In the junior division, which featured 10 teams, the Lancers squad went 3-0 to win their pool.
Senior
The Lancers went 1-1-1 in their pool against three strong teams.
The Lancers lost 10-5 against Wingham Holy Cross Catholic. Holy Cross was the OFSAA ‘AA’ gold medalist in 2022 and was a top three seed at OFSAA last year. Emmanuella Caleb had the Lancers score.
In the second game, Ursuline tied Owen Sound 5-5. Owen Sound was the OFSAA ‘AAA’ bronze medalist last year. Cassandra Delpech scored for UCC.
In the final game, Ursuline defeated Caledon Mayfield 20-0. Mayfield is one of the strongest high school rugby programs in the province, winning OFSAA ‘AAA’ gold in 2023, 2022 and 2019. Cassandra Delpech, Emmanuella Caleb, Victoria Matteis and Amber Parent scored for the Lancers.
