Mitchell wins provincial Indigenous golf title
Walpole Island First Nation’s Cheryl Mitchell won the Ontario women’s Indigenous Ontario golf Championship held August 12-14 at the MontHill Golf and Country Club.
Mitchell (nee Tooshkenig), fired a three-round total of 226 (77-76-73) to win by by 10 strokes over Matachewan’s Melanie Burgess. Moriviantown’s Savana Smith was third (239).
In September, Smith and Mitchell qualified to represent Team Indigenous Ontario in the Indigenous Challenge Cup at Bear Mountain Golf Club in Victoria, B.C..
This is Mitchell’s third consecutive women’s Indigenous Ontario title, as she has won the event for all three years it has taken place. She is a former Ontario Amateur champion (2003) and golfed collegiately at Kent State and Oakland University.
A graduate of Wallaceburg District Secondary School, Mitchell now lives in Ohio.
