Chatham’s Derek Whitson took home a gold medal as a part of Team Canada at the IPC World Sledge Ice Hockey Championships this past weekend.

Canada’s defense, which features Whitson, put in a solid effort in the gold medal game against the United States, shutting out the USA 1-0 in Goyang, Korea.

Canada’s Graeme Murray had the lone goal of the gold medal game, assisted by Anthony Gale.

Whitson played much of the tournament on Canada’s top defensive pairing, topping the team in ice time in some games.

Against Russia in the preliminary rounds, Whitson had 2 assists in a close 4-3 Canada win.

The win was Canada’s first gold in the event since 2008. The USA won gold last year, while Canada took home bronze.
