Chatham sports legend George Aitken passed away this week at age 84. Aitken, a member of the Chatham Sports Hall of Fame passed away on April 7, 2015.

Born in Toronto, George, who is survived by his wife Doreen, worked for Chatham Hydro.

Aitken was best known as a player and coach for the Chatham Maroons Senior ‘A’ team, including leading the Maroons to an Allen Cup championship as Canada’s Senior Hockey Champions in 1959-60.

Aitken also played Junior B and A for the Toronto Marlboros in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s before mocing on to play for the Stratford Indians, were he led his team to an Eastern Canadian Championship.

Following his playing career, Aitken coached the Chatham Jr. Maroons for 11 seasons, and also had stints with the Windsor Spitfires and Senior Chatham Maroons as coach.

Aitken was honoured by the Chatham Maroons earlier this season as one of the first two inductees into the new Faces Of The Maroons. Aitken was honoured along with former teammate Copper Leyte.
