Chatham’s Alison Stephens will be bringing an OFSAA gold medal back to her hometown and school next week, after winning gold on day two of the 2017 OFSAA track and field championships.

Stephens, a grade 10 student at Chatham-Kent Secondary School won gold in the Junior girls discus, smashing her own personal best, throwing 37.25m.

“This is the proudest moment of my life,” said Stephens following her throw.

The distance, which beat the silver medallist by more than 3 metres, even surprised Stephens herself, as she entered OFSAA having won OFSAA West Regionals with a throw of 34.64m.

“I just can’t believe it. I’ve wanted to throw 35m all year, and to come out and throw 37m is unbelievable,” she added.

Stephens was the first Chatham-Kent athlete to medal at the 2017 OFSAA championships, although several athletes are into the finals following preliminary events and heats.

Yesterday, Stephens qualified for another final as part of CKSS Junior girls 4x100m relay team.
