Wallaceburg, ON – First place means nothing in the Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League these days. The Mooretown Flags topped the Wallaceburg Lakers 7-6 in a high scoring affair at Wallaceburg Memorial Arena.

Mooretown jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the first period with the lone Wallaceburg goal being scored by Brendon Merritt.

Early in the second period however, Wallaceburg showed they weren’t done yet by rallying back with four goals to hold a 5-4 lead heading into the third period. Norm Leger, Rob Pollock, Tyson Isaac, and Tyler Lewis scored for the Lakers.

Finding their first period vigor, the Mooretown Flags powered out of the gates in the third scoring 3 quick goals, including a dagger only 40 seconds into the period. With a 7-5 lead, Mooretown was able to hold on for the win despite Tyler Lewis cutting the lead to 7-6 with his second goal of the game at 12:15 of the third period.

With the loss, Belle River remains within striking distance of the Lakers for first overall sitting only three points behind Wallaceburg. If the playoffs were to begin today, the Wallaceburg Lakers would face off against the Dresden Kings in a rematch of the Highway 78 Series.
