Silver Lining for the PeeWee Kent County Fillies in Woodstock
The Kent County PeeWee C Fillies hockey team faced the BCH Ice Dogs in their first game of a tournament Friday morning and scored a goal in each period for a 3-0 win. Adrianna Long, Danica Drewery and McKenna Massender scored for the Fillies with assists going to Karleigh Murphy, Rachael Cameron and Megan Van Mol.
Later that day, the Fillies faced off against the St. Clair Storm. Two second period goals by the Fillies were the difference as Kent County held on for a 2-0 win. Long and Drewery once again scored, with helpers from Van Mol (2) and Cassidy Wammes.
The Fillies returned to Woodstock on Saturday to complete the round robin portion of the tournament and met league rival St. Thomas Panthers. Once again, Kaysey Dorssers was solid in net earning the shutout in a 3-0 win. Drewery continued her goal streak with an assist by Ann Clendenning. Jenna Stepniak scored an unassisted goal as she banged home a loose puck at the side of the net. Paige Monden finished a nice passing play from linemates Wammes and Van Mol with her first goal of the tournament late in the game. By finishing first in their pool, Kent County was headed to the semi-finals.
Sunday afternoon’s semi-final game was a rematch of the previous game, as the Fillies faced St. Thomas who finished first in their respective pool. And, just like Saturday, the Fillies earned another 3-0 win. The Fillies defense was unbeatable again, helping Dorssers earn her 4th shutout of the tournament. Long netted a couple of goals in this game, with assists going to Wammes and Val Gotelaer. Late in the second period, Monden scored on the same play as a day earlier, this time on the power play, with helpers going to Wammes and Van Mol.
Sunday night’s championship final was a battle between two teams who had not been scored upon in the tournament thus far. The Ingersoll Ice were also a perfect 4-0 with 0 goals against. The Ice started the game quickly catching the Fillies off guard and scoring 2 first period goals. After that, it was an evenly matched affair as neither team could manage to score another goal. Ingersoll held on for the 2-0 win, and Kent County settled for the silver.
The entire Fillies team played some excellent hockey throughout the weekend in earning a 2nd place finish! League play resumes later this week, with playoffs just around the corner.
