Merritt's OT Goal Lifts Lakers to Eliminate the Blenheim Blades
Wallaceburg Sports News – Brendon Merritt lives for overtime. At least that’s what fans of the Wallaceburg Lakers are beginning to believe as the young Lakers forward scored his second overtime winning goal in as many night’s. Sunday, Merritt helped down the Blenheim Blades in Blenheim, scoring the third goal in a 3-2 overtime victory.
Again last night, in game 5 of Wallaceburg’s best of seven series against the Blenheim Blades, Merritt put home the series clinching goal only 55 seconds into the extra frame on the powerplay for a 4-3 win.
Wallaceburg also received goals from Rob Pollock, who scored twice, and Wayd Pitfield. Thomas Innes scored a single goal for Blenheim, while Zack Mailloux scored two.
Blenheim again received amazing goaltending from Taylor Speed who was his team’s MVP during this series. Speed was peppered for 46 shots during the game. At the other end of the rink, Matt Berglund again played solid in net for the Wallaceburg Lakers making 34 saves in the win.
Wallaceburg will now advance to play the winner of the Wheatley-Essex series, while Mooretown will face Belle River. This occurs due to a new cross over rule implemented by the OHA. In the old rules, Wallaceburg would have faced Mooretown who is the next lowest seed.
