Griffith, Canada Win Opener at U-18 World Hockey Championships

Seth Griffith Team CanadaSeth Griffith and Team Canada got off to a winning start at the IIHF U-18 World Championships with a 5-0 win over the Czech Republic. Wallaceburg’s Seth Griffith didn’t find the score sheet, but he did record 3 shots in the game and took a 2-minute tripping minor.

Although Griffith has yet to score with Team Canada, Canadian officials are expecting Griffith to be an offensive contributer, and to play a strong defensive role with the U-18 team as well.

When asked by CKSN what he thought Griffith brought to his team, Team Canada Head Coach Mike Williamson had this to say, “We like Seth’s compete level and his ability to play a stong role on all three zones. We feel Seth has the offensive skill to help contribute to our success.”

With the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League this season, Griffith was an offensive leader: however, to be successful at this higher level, Griffith will also need to show an ability to play strong hockey in all areas of the ice,

“We are asking all players to play a 200 foot role for Team Canada,” said Williamson, “and be responsible in all areas of the ice.”

Malcolm Subban posted the shutout for Team Canada in the opening game. Mark Scheifele scored twice, while Eric Locke, Morgan Rielly, and Ryan Murphy also scored for Canada in their win against the Czech Republic.

Canada plays Finland Saturday April 16 followed by Norway Monday, April 18 and Sweden Tuesday, April 19.
