Whitson Scores as Canada Wins Gold at World Sledge Hockey Challenge
It took only a few minutes for Chatham’s Derek Whitson to make his mark in the Gold Medal game of the World Sledge Hockey Challenge as Whitson opened the scoring against Norway on the way to winning a gold medal.
After Whitson got the ball rolling 2:32 into the first period on his goal from Billy Bridges and Scott Arsenault, his teammates took it from there going on to win gold 8-0 over Norway and capture the gold.
Minutes after scoring, Whitson took a high sticking penalty.
Billy Bridges and Greg Westlake led the charge for Team Canada following Whitson’s first period goal adding two goals each.
In all, Canada outscored their opponents 48-2 in the tournament. Derek Whitson, who was born with cerebral palsy, scored 2 goals and added 9 assists for 11 points in only 5 games at the World Sledge Hockey Challange which was hosted at the Western Fair Athletic Centre in London, Ontario. Whitson’s 11 points were good for 5th overall in scoring at the World Sledge Hockey Challenge.
