In high school soccer action, the KCSSAA boys soccer league decided their championship match up Monday evening with the Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks advancing to face the Ursuline College Lancers.
In semi-final one, CKSS defeated the Lambton-Kent Cardinals 1-0 on a penalty shot goal by Jake Fancy. CKSS’ Macks Homes was named his team’s game star, while Tanner Pitel, the goaltender from Dresden took LKCS’ game star honours.
In the second semi-final, UCC downed the Pain Court Patriotes 5-3. Brandon Dube had a hat trick for the UCC Lancers while Ronnie Stevens and Scott Pollard both scored. Pollard was also named UCC’s game star. At half time, ESPC (Pain Court) looked as though they had things under control with a 2-0 lead, but UCC stormed back for the late win. Blake Blondeel scored twice for Pain Court while Rick Coomber scored a single goal for the Patriotes. Pain Court’s game star honour was given to Andrew Woodall.
In Junior Boys Football action, the CKSS Golden Hawks ended a dreadful season with an 0-6 record, something the school has not experienced in recent years. Their winless season was capped by a 34-14 loss at the hands of the second place UCC Lancers. UCC will now advance to play Blenheim in one KCSSAA football semi-final, while the top ranked Wallaceburg Tartans football team will play John McGregor.
In badminton news, Kailey Houston of CKSS won the silver medal in C Flight at the OFSAA Championships in Aurora on the weekend. She lost her first two matches but rallied to defeat Carlys Gaker of Havergal College (21-8, 21-16) , then Amy Hutchinson of Parry Sound High School (21-13, 21-15). In the gold medal match of C Flight she was awarded the silver medal after a close three game match with Alexandra Sitnik of Holy Cross (16-21, 21-13, 16-21).
