Hawks Look Like Senior Football Contenders in Road Win

The Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks Senior Football team defeated the Blenheim Bobcats 22-8 on the road Tuesday night, making their case as one of the top teams in the KCSSAA loop.

In the opening quarter, Kyle DeMars ran back a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown to get the Golden Hawks. It took until the middle of the third quarter however, for CKSS to blow the game wide open as Tanner Emery ran in a 2-yard score, followed by a 38-yard touchdown reception on a Clark Green pass to make the score 22-0.

Blenheim got on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter, however it wasn’t enough for the Bobcats as the CKSS Golden Hawks held on for an important win on the road.

Luke Hueniken, Tanner Emery, and Adam Labute each had an excellent rushing game for the Golden Hawks, keeping the markers moving down field all game. Hueniken led CKSS with 68 yards on 6 runs.

According to CKSS head coach Jeff Green, although the running game was originally a concern, the team pulled together, with help from the offensive line, to keep the offense moving,

“We battled through some early personnel concerns with our number number one running back going out with the flu. The other offensive backs really picked up the ball tonight and shared the rock.”

“The offensive line improved their play in the second half, to put together a couple strong drives against a very stingy Bobcat defense.”

On the defensive side of the ball, 5th year player Ashwin Roy had 7 tackles and a fumble recovery, Connor Martin had 6 tackles and a quarterback sack, Tanner Emery had 6 tackles, a blocked punt, and a quarterback sack, while Spencer Leclair had 6 tackles.

“Defense and specials made some big plays to keep the pressure on Blenheim,” coach Green said following the win.

CKSS will next face Wallaceburg Saturday, September 24, in what could be a preview of the Senior Football final.
