Chatham-Kent Sports Year in Review: February 2011

- February 1 – Two Wallaceburg Minor Lacrosse alumni, Jordan Durston and Zach Herreweyers were selected in the OLA Jr.A Lacrosse draft. Zach Herreweyers was picked 5th overall by Peterborough while Jordan Durston was selected 22nd overall by Six Nations. - February 2 – Preparations and celebrations for Shaun Suisham’s Super Bowl XLV continued, including a large celebration at Wallaceburg District Secondary School, where WDSS gained new meaning as “Well Done Shaun Suisham.” Read more about WDSS and Shaun Suisham here…
- February 4 – It was the start of a long drawn saga, but at the time, it seemed like a huge moment in Chatham-Kent sports as Chatham’s Andy Fantuz signed an NFL contract with the Chicago Bears. Read about Andy Fantuz’ signing here…
- February 5 – In honour of Black History Month, Chatham’s Fergie Jenkins was commemorated by Canada Post with his own stamp, an honour that was marked by a celebration at the Chatham Armoury. Read about Chatham’s celebration for Fergie Jenkins here…
- February 6 – Although the Pittsburgh Steelers lost Super Bowl XLV against the Green Bay Packers, Wallaceburg’s Shaun Suisham kicked well including a 36-yard field goal. Wallaceburg and Chatham-Kent celebrated what will undoubtedly go down not only as one of the top moments of 2011, but of the last decade in CK sports. - February 7 – The Wallaceburg Lakers topped the Great Lakes Junior C standings for their first ever Great Lakes regular season crown. Read about the Wallaceburg Lakers season here…
- February 12 – Chatham-Kent Police officer Michael Pearce travelled to Turkey to officiate the World University Games. Read about Pearce’s experience in Turkey here…
- February 19 – Not to forget about high school sports, the KCSSAA volleyball champions were crowned across Chatham-Kent. CKSS, Blenheim, Pain Court, and UCC took home KCSSAA volleyball titles. Read about the KCSSAA volleyball finals here…
- February 21 – After falling victim to a fraud costing them $70,000, Wallaceburg Lacrosse held a gala banquet to revitilize their organization. The gala raised more than $20,o00 for WMLA. Read about the WMLA gala here…
- Ferbruary 22 – After a suprising fight from the final playoff qualifiers, the Blenheim Blades, the Wallaceburg Lakers advanced to face the Wheatley Sharks in the Great Lakes Junior C semi-finals. Read more about the Wallaceburg Lakers playoff series win here…
- February 24 – In high school hockey, the UCC Lancers shut out the CKSS Golden Hawks to win the Kent girls title, but it was the boys final between CKSS and Dresden that had fans talking as the CKSS Golden Hawks defeated the LKCS Cardinals 3-2 in a dramatix shootout.
