Brett DeKoning, Matt Mapletoft, and Sarah Jane Sass are just three examples of the high calibre curlers being produced in Chatham-Kent.

Earlier this month, DeKoning, a former John McGregor Secondary School student, skipped his Omenee Curling Club rink to an Ontario Junior Men’s Championship, and will soon represent Ontario at the Canadian National Junior Championships.

DeKoning, who is currently attending UWO, will travel to Napanee for the National Championships from February 4-12.

A former National Champion himself, and a Wallaceburg product, Matt Mapletoft knows the feeling of success DeKoning is approaching.

Mapletoft however, who also represented Canada at the World Junior Curling Championships, is now competing in Men’s level curling, and has qualified for the Ontario Provincial Men’s Curling Championships in Stratford from February 6-12.

To advance to Stratford, Mapletoft’s rink had to defeat Olympic sliver medalist Mike Harris twice in their regional qualifier.

As well, for the second straight year, Sarah Jane Sass of Chatham, a CKSS graduate, competed in the Quebec Junior Women’s Curling Championships, this time taking home a bronze medal with the Hudson Legion Curling Club.

Sass, a McGill University student will again be Junior eligible next season.
