Shootout Needed in Great Lakes Final Rematch
The Wheatley Sharks likely still feel a slight ache in their stomachs every time they play the Belle River Canadiens after Belle River eliminated Wheatley in 7 games from the Great Lakes Junior C Final last spring.
Monday night in Wheatley, the two teams faced each other, with the Sharks exacting some revenge in a 2-1 shootout win.
After a scoreless first period, veteran Scott Chauvin got the Belle River Canadiens on the scoreboard first to put the road team up 1-0. Later in the second period on the powerplay, Riley Babkirk, who has been one of Wheatley’s leaders this season, scored to tie the game.
Wheatley goalie Marc Tremblay and Canadiens stopperZakk Olvin shut the door in the third for another scoreless period, as well as overtime, to send the game to a shootout.
In the shootout, Wheatley’s Austin Fontaine scored the only goal lifting the Sharks to a 2-1 win.
