Cyclones Hold Off Wolves in Alliance Semis
The Minor Atom Chatham-Kent Cyclones narrowly held off the Waterloo Wolves in game one of the Alliance Hockey semi-finals Saturday at Memorial Arena.
After jumping out to a 3-0 lead, Chatham-Kent allowed Waterloo back into the game, heading into the final five minutes of the game tied 3-3, before the Cyclones pulled ahead for the 5-3 win.
Cameron Symons got the Minor Atom Chatham-Kent Cyclones on the board first early in the opening period.
In the second, Quinn Erickson and Deni Goure put the Cyclones up 3-0 before the Wolves found some bite. To open the third period, Waterloo scored three unanswered goals, with the tying goal coming on the powerplay.
With only 4:57 remaining in the game, Brendon Mairs, on the powerplay, scored the eventual game winner. Just over a minute later, Matt Gaudrault added an insurance goal for the Cyclones, lifting the young team to a 5-3 win, and a 1-0 series lead over Waterloo.
Jessie McPherson picked up the win in net for Chatham-Kent, while Craig Spence played set up man assisting on 3 of the Cyclones 5 goals Saturday afternoon.
The Minor Atom Cyclones will travel to Waterloo Sunday afternoon for game 2 of their series. Puck drop is at 2:30pm.
