Birthday Boy Shines in Win
Named the game’s first star in their win over the Saginaw Spirit, Griffith scored his first of the game on the powerplay midway through the second period.
In the third period, Griffith struck again just over two minutes into the frame, and finished off his hat trick later in the period, again on the powerplay.
With the OHL’s next two leading scorers, Ryan Strome and Alex Galchenyuk missing significant time over the Christmas break while participating in the World Junior Hockey Championships, Griffith had the opportunity to climb from third in the OHL scoring rank, to first this week.
Through 41 games, Griffith leads the OHL in both goals and points with 28 goals, and 67 points, five more than Niagara’s Strome, and six more than Sarnia’s Galchenyuk and Charles Sarault. Griffith and the London Knights are back in action again Saturday against the Kitchener Rangers.
Chatham Maroons goalie Darien Ekblad was the backup for the Saginaw Spirit in the loss.
