McEwan, Johnston Attend OHL Draft Combine

Two Chatham-Kent Cyclones prospects attended the OHL combine in Toronto at the Ricoh Colosseum this past weekend. Chatham’s James McEwan, a forward, and Wallaceburg’s Brendan Johnston, a goaltender, both went to the final OHL event which aims to showcase the best prospects for the upcoming OHL draft to teams.

16 goalies and 80 skaters were invited to the camp, which features off-ice testing, on-ice testing, and games.

McEwan, a UCC student, led the Chatham-Kent Cyclones in scoring this season with 15 goals and 12 assists in 30 games. Serving as the team’s assistant captain, McEwan has a powerful shot and the ability to create offense independently with breakout plays.

Johnston, a WDSS student, posted a 0.916 save percentage and 2.36 GAA, while collecting 6 of the Cyclones’ 8 wins in net this season. Standing 6 feet, Johnston is a competitive goaltender who challengers shooters and takes away opportunities utilizing his strong positioning.

Other top prospects from the Minor Midget Cyclones include captain Dede Cato, who is an explosive skater, and assistant captain Drew Marlatt who led the Cyclones in playoff scoring, and was their second leading scorer during the regular season.

The OHL Draft takes place April 6.
