Melvin’s Brewers Rebounding After Slow Start
Chatham’s Doug Melvin is optimistic his Milwaukee Brewers baseball club will have a strong MLB season following a slow start. The team’s general manager since 2002, Melvin has built the Brewers into a team that has been the most successful of any in their franchise’s history.
“We had a little bit of a slow start in our first ten games,” said Melvin about the Brewers, who stumbled out of the gate going 2-8 to begin the MLB season.
“Right now we’re pitching a lot better than we did that first week,” Melvin added about his pitching staff, which includes starters Marco Estrada, Wily Peralta, Yovani Gallardo, and Kyle Lohse.
Melvin, who was inducted in to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame last summer, stated that one bright spot in the Brewers lineup, has been Canadian Ryan Braun, who was the National League MVP in 2011, and has been an All-Star and Silver Slugger five consecutive years.
“Right now we’re struggling with our bats a bit, but Ryan (Braun) is pretty consistent, he’s one of the more consistent guys in baseball,” Melvin said of Braun. “When you get a lineup of 8 hitters in the National League, there’s got to be guys and times, where other guys step up. Ryan will be there at the end of the year, he’ll have good numbers, but he is still our leader offensively, the guy we look to who will come up with big hits.”
Following a horrible start that saw the Brewers with only 2 wins in their first 10 games, the Brewers have won 8 of their last 10, and have a record above .500.
Milwaukee plays series’ against Pittsburgh and St. Louis this week.
