The unusually wet and stormy summer in Chatham-Kent is keeping more than a few teams and events from participating in their regularly scheduled sporting activities.

One of the hardest hit events has been the weekly races at South Buxton Raceway. For the third time this season, the Memorial Night races were rained out. The races at South Buxton were rained out June 1, July 6, and again this weekend on July 27. Buxton’s Memorial Night races will be rescheduled again, for August 10.

With more than 500mm of rain falling in Chatham-Kent over the last three weeks, local soccer and baseball teams from across the Municipality have seen games cancelled and rescheduled due to severe weather. Many local teams were forced to open their season away from their typical parks due to wet field conditions, and as the summer has progressed, little has changed to improve the saturated fields.

Similarly, flooding at multiple area golf courses has forced clubs to restrict the use of carts on soggy ground, and even close parts of their courses in recent weeks.

Although the heat locally has broke, rain remains in the forecast for up to four days in the coming week across the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.
