The Chatham-Kent Secondary School Junior Girls basketball team captured gold this past weekend in Georgetown, Ontario.

After winning their opening game via forfeit, as their opponent from Barrie was late due to traffic, the Golden Hawks moved to the winning side, but first were offered an exhibition game against the hometown team, which strangely enough, would prove to be a preview of the championship game.

In the opening exhibition game, CKSS defeated Georgetown 32-8, riding the strong performance of Rayne Kellier, who scored 11-points in the win. Loren Kiluk, Amanda Woodrow, and Natalie Stewardson all had 4-points in the game.

With a bye in their opening game, Golden Hawks’ second game served as the tournament semi-finals. Facing Waterloo Bluevale, CKSS put up strong offensive numbers, with Brittany McLaren leading the charge, winning 51-34. McLaren scored 12-points, while Natalie Stewardson had 10, Jana Kucera scored 9, and Lauren Ball put in 5-points.

After their exhibition earlier, CKSS faced host Georgetown in the final, but this time, with a championship in sight. Balanced scoring helped the Chatham-Kent team to a 33-21 win, and a tournament title. McLaren and Ball were CKSS’ top scorers in the final, each contributing 6-points. Rayne Kellier had 5-points, while Stewardson and Brooke Mackinnon each had 4-points, Jana Kucera and Logan Kucera has 3-points each, and Loren Koluk had 2.

CKSS is back in action Tuesday, hosting the UCC Lancers, and Thursday against the John McGregor Panthers.
