The Kent County high school tennis championships took place over multiple days this week.

In recent years, the John McGregor Secondary School Panthers have developed a strong tennis program, and this year’s team lived up to that reputation. JMSS won three divisions, while CKSS took two in the finals.

In boys singles, Justin Baker won the singles final, defeating CKSS’ Rick An 8-5. Laura Polowick, also of John McGregor defended her Kent title from last season, by defeating UCC’s Michelle Truong 8-2 in the final.

In doubles action, CKSS Golden Hawks Kara Heuniken and Deanne Lo, who advanced to OFSAA last season, won their second straight girls title, defeating JMSS’ Corynn Savard and Kailee Waddick 8-7.

Aiden Poole and Josh Ashby of CKSS beat Kelton Evans and Blair Derynck of John McGregor in the boys doubles final, 8-2.

Finally, in mixed doubles action, McGregor’s Sam Wilcox and Ashley Herfst beat schoolmates Darby Darnard and Nick Van Der Paelt 8-2.

All winners and finalists will advance to the SWOSSAA tennis championships Thursday, October 17 in Sarnia.
