Sharks Hold Off Charge, Keep Lakers Winless
The Wheatley Sharks sat back on their heels Monday night on home ice, and it almost cost them a win as they narrowly held off a late charge by the Wallaceburg Lakers. Wheatley held off Wallaceburg for a 4-3 win.
The loss dropped the Wallaceburg Lakers to 0-8 this season.
To open the game, Sebastian Kanally took a feed from Eric Rivard to put the Sharks ahead 1-0 after one period.
In the second period, Austin Thompson, and Austin Fontaine scored for Wheatley, making the score 3-0. Although it looked like the game was out of reach, the teams would battle in a wild third period.
Michigan resident Evan Weidenback put the Wallaceburg Lakers on his shoulders early in the third period, scoring twice to close the gap to 3-2. After Fontaine made the score 4-2, Wallaceburg continued to charge back, with Justin Whitson scoring in the game’s final minute.
Despite a late flurry however, the Lakers could not complete the comeback. Wallaceburg hosts the Dresden Kings Wednesday, before travelling to Alvinston on Friday. Wheatley has a week to wait before they host the Essex 73s next Monday.
