The Blenheim Blades added two veteran presences to their lineup this weekend, with the acquisition of James Shelton, and the re-signing of goaltender Dylan Vanderpol.

Shelton, one of the league’s top five scorers for almost the entire season, is a Tupperville resident, and is in his fifth season in the Great Lakes Junior C hockey league. Shelton was the Belle River Canadiens leading scorer at the time of his acquisition, and is a former Dresden Junior Kings star.

In his first two games with the Blades over the weekend, Shelton had two assists.

Blenheim also re-signed fifth year veteran goaltender Dylan Vanderpol, who was the team’s starter last season. With the re-signing of Vanderpol, Blenheim released second year goaltender Justin Pratt, choosing to go with rookie Eric Stewardson as their other goaltender.

Vanderpol decided not to play his overage season in training camp, but had a change of heart and rejoined the team last week during practice. Vanderpol, 21, won 45 of the games he played in since 2008 and last year was 16-10-0-1 with three shutouts and was named the league’s player of the month for September. His goals-against average was 3.21.

Despite the new additions, the Blenheim Blades lost both of their weekend games, falling 5-4 to Mooretown and 4-2 to Belle River. Stewardson lost both starts as the team decided to wait to give Vanderpol his first start.
