Chatham-Kent Sports Year In Review: February

February was yet another busy month in Chatham-Kent sports, and also featured for the first time, a new feature from the Chatham-Kent Sports Network as we celebrated Here are the highlights from sports in Chatham-Kent for the month of February 2013:
- Lakers Eliminated From Playoff Race: The month started with a bitter taste for the Wallaceburg Lakers, as they were eliminated from the Great Lakes playoff race, allowing a hot Kingsville team to come from several points behind to steal the last playoff spot.
- Schaafsma Makes The AHL: Blenheim’s Jamie Schaafsma has spent most of his professional hockey career in Europe and in North America’s lower leagues, but he got the closest he has been to the NHL in February, signing and playing for the AHL’s Houston Aeros.
- Wayne Jacklin Passes Away: Dresden Sports Hall of Famer and local hockey legend Wayne Jacklin passes away, ending his long battle with cancer.
- Preston Named OUA Coach of the Year: Chatham’s Dave Preston was named the OUA mens volleyball coach of the year, leading the McMaster Marauders to another top finish. Later in the month, Preston would add CIS Coach of the Year honours.
- High School Sports Return: After a cold start to the winter, high school athletics, which had previously been suspended due to contract issues between the Ontario government and Ontario teachers’ union, return.
- Allin Named All-Star: Chatham’s Max Allin topped the country in scoring, being named an OUA and CIS basketball all-star. He received OUA First Team honours and CIS Second Team honours.
