Sharks Snap Lakers’ Hot Streak
The Wallaceburg Lakers tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Wheatley Sharks would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-2.
Wheatley made the score 4-1 on a goal by Brett Babkirk at 7:24 in the third period, and Wallaceburg got as close as 4-2 when Justin Whitson scored 8:12 into the third period.
The Sharks were paced by Jimmy Ciacelli, who racked up one goal and one assist. Ciacelli scored 10:06 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Wheatley. Frank Ciacelli provided the assist.
Wheatley excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Sharks’ offense rang up 31 shots on the Lakers’ net.
Others who scored for Wheatley included Brett Bowman and Cale Phibbs, who each put in one. In addition, Wheatley received assists from Austin Thompson, who had three and Eric Rivard and Jon Woelk, who each chipped in one.
Wallaceburg avoided man-down situations well, registering one major for five minutes in penalty time. The Lakers ended up below its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game.
Ryan Gruszka also scored for Wallaceburg. More assists for Wallaceburg came via Jeff Morey and Frank Saputo, who contributed one a piece.
Everett Omstead made 13 saves for Wheatley on 15 shots. The Sharks incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Wallaceburg’s Joel Sowinski stopped 27 shots out of the 31 that he faced. The Lakers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Scott Lubbers was ejected from the game.
