The Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks Junior Boys Basketball team defeated Ursuline College 48-47 in a thrilling Kent Championship game Saturday.

The Hawks had a 30-16 lead at half, and a 41-19 lead late in the third quarter before the UCC comeback bid began.

With some of CKSS’ key players in foul trouble, UCC outscored CKSS 28-3 and led 47-44 with under a minute to go. Owen Payne hit two free throws, and Avery Schaffer’s reverse layup with 15 seconds to go proved to be the game winning basket to allow the Hawks to prevail. Schaffer led the Hawks with 19 points. Brock Redford scored 10, and Payne had 8. UCC was led by Owen Dorssers who scored 22 points.

In the single ‘A’ Senior and Junior finals, the Blenheim Bobcats captured the senior title 48-31 over Chatham Christian, paced by 18-points from Jared Hansen, and Craig Oakey who had 10-points. Mike Ball had 10-points for the Chatham Christian Flames.

In the Junior ‘A’ final, Shawn Sedlacek had 21-points leading Pain Court to a 58-29 win over Ridgetown. Mitchell Benn had 14-points for Pain Court, while Ridgetown’s Curtis Huff was his team’s leading scorer, also collecting 14-points.
