U19 Thunder Win Provincial Silver
Backstopped by Alissa Reid, the Thunder went 5-1 in pool play, beginning with a 2-1 win over Seaforth. Tristen Stewart and Hannah Doforno had the goals. In game two, Doforno and Stewart continued scoring, picking up two goals each in a 4-1 win over GCRA.
On day two of the tournament, Chatham opened with a 4-4 tie against Elora. Doforno had a hat trick while Sophia Skorenky had Chatham’s other goal. Doforno also picked up an assist, while Jane Van Oirschot had two assists.
In their second game of the day, Claire Hedrick picked up a goal and an assist, leading Chatham to a 3-1 win over Ajax. Doforno and Van Oirschot scored Chatham’s other goals.
Closing out the round robin Saturday, Doforno, Van Oirschot and Kara Hueniken scored to lift Chatham to a 3-1 win over CORA. Their final round robin game saw Chatham playing a how powered squad from St. Marys. Chatham was handed their first loss of the Provincial tournament, a 5-2 defeat to St. Marys. Doforno and Hedrick had the Thunder’s goals.
In the semi final, Hueniken and Skorenky scored and assisted on a goal each, while Allisa Reid shut the door in a 2-0 victory over Elora, to send the Chatham Thunder to the gold medal win.
Facing St. Marys again in the final, Chatham couldn’t upend the powerhouse, finishing the Provincial tournament with a silver medal following a 7-4 loss to St. Marys. Doforno scored twice, while Hueniken and Nicole Hook each had singles. Hueniken also had two assists in the game.
