Lakers Hand Out Awards, Honour White
Taking home top honours at the ceremony was goaltender Joel Sowinski, who was named team MVP. Sowinski was the Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League player of the month in December 2013, routinely keeping the Lakers in games despite facing upwards of 50 shots per night.
Justin Whitson was honoured as the team’s top scorer this season. The overage forward from Shelby Township, Michigan, scored 21 goals and added 14 assists for 35 points in 37 games.
Sarnia’s Mike Kindrachuk was named the team’s Best Defenseman, while Wallaceburg resident Lucais Meyskens was named the Best Defensive Forward.
Finally, captain Scott Lubbers was awarded the Heart and Soul Memorial Award in honour of Tristan Carswell, which was presented to Lubbers at the banquet by the Carswell family.
The night also set out to honour Jason White. White was killed February 27 in a crash on highway 402 as a part of a 30 card pileup. White played 8 games for the Wallaceburg Lakers this season. In his memory, the Chatham Pro Shop donated a jersey, which was signed by the team. White’s family was in attendance at the banquet.
The Wallaceburg Lakers missed the playoffs this season, finishing last in the Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League with a 5-34-1-0 record.
