This year’s high school rugby season kick started Tuesday as the Wallaceburg Tartans faced off against the CKSS Golden Hawks. It was the Hawks’ first game back in the league after multiple seasons off.

Wallaceburg started the game off strong keeping most of the play in the Hawks end. The Tartans dominated the first half taking a 20-0 lead.

The Tartans continued their strong force scoring four tries within the first ten minutes of play. Wallaceburg took complete control of the second half taking a dominating lead of 52-0 to end the game.

The Hawks head coach Rachel King, says this year will be a great learning experience for her team.

“I just want to teach the sport,” stated King. “For a lot of the girls this is their first time ever playing so we just want them to go out and learn the game, have fun, and learn the culture of the sport.”

Wallaceburg’s coach Brett Campbell says Tuesday’s win is a good way to start their season.

“This win is a good foundation for us to grow off of,” says Campbell. “For our girls this is the first match that they have had so it was good to get our rookies some experience and have our veteran players see all their efforts over the past three years finally start to come together. We’re really happy to have CK back in the league and look forward to facing them more this season.”

Wallaceburg will face off against UCC this Friday, April 25th.
