2014 Team Nominees For Chatham Sports Hall of Fame
The Chatham Sports Hall of Fame recently announced their 2014 nominees for the Induction Ceremony which will take place this coming September. Below are the nominees for the Team category. The winning selection will be announced before July 11.
The nominees are:
1977-78 Chatham Royals Intermediate “C” Hockey Team – The Royals were started by Derek Davenport and consisted of players who lived in Chatham and played in the city hockey league. They played a regular Intermediate schedule but did not practice as a team ubtil after the city league was finished for the season. Their league record was 22 wins, 7 losses, and 2 ties. In the league playoffs the Royals defeated Dresden Lumberkings 4 straight and then Wheatley Olmsteads 4 straight. In the OHA semi-finals they played Stirling (near Belleville). After winning the first 3 games, the Royals won the fourth and deciding game 7-4 before 1500 fans at Memorial Arena. In the finals they played Port Elgin Sunocos who had not lost a game all year. Chatham won the first 2 games but then lost 3-1 in game 3. Since the ice had been removed from Memorial Arena, game 4 was played at Northside Arena and the Royals won 4-1. Port Elgin won the next 2 games to even the series at 3-3. Game 7 was played at the Port Elgin Arena which was packed. The Royals scored 4 third period goals to record a come-from-behind 64 victory and claim the OHA title. Their overall record was 39 wins, 10 losses, and 2 ties. 1986-87 Moose Lodge Major “AA” Pee Wee Hockey Team – The 1986-87 Major Pee Wee Hockey team had a victorious, exciting, and exceptional year. In the OMHA Playdowns, the Pee Wees defeated Pickering 4 games to 1 to become the first Chatham team to win an OMHA title in 9 years. The All Ontario “AA” Tournament featured the championship teams from OMHA, Northern Ontario, and Greater Toronto. The Pee Wees went undefeated in the tournament beating Toronto Aeros 5-4 for the championship. This was the first All Ontario Championship in CMHA history. During their way to the OMHA and OHA crowns, the Pee Wees record was 15 wins, 2 losses, and 2 ties. 1987 Chatham McDonald’s “AA” Pee Wee Baseball Team – The 1987 McDonald’s Pee Wee Baseball team had an exceptionally fine year with an overall record of 50 wins and 9 losses on route to winning the OBA “AA” championship. It was part of a 3-year successful run by most of the players and coaches. In 1985 they won the OBA “AA” Tyke Championship, in 1986 they lost to Oakville in the final game for the OBA “A” Pee Wee Championship, and then won again in 1987. During that year, they won tournaments in Wyoming and Strathroy, and were Western Counties regular season and playoff champions. In the championship tournament held in Sudbury, Chatham, behind the pitching of Jon Stairs and Chris Peterson, beat Streetsville 2-1 in the final game to win the Ontario “AA” title. Team members were Sean Abe, Mike Baker, Jeff Crowell, Dan Duphette, Dave Hamilton, Dan Martin, Steve Oliphant, Chris Peterson, Matt Phipps, Mike Rylett, Jon Stairs, Shadd Smith, Duane Snelgrove, Brad Twigg, Bill Twigg (coach), Carl Snelgrove (coach), and Murray Peterson (manager).
1989-90 CKSS Boys “AA” Volleyball Team – The “AA” classification for high school athletics was established in 1985 and CKSS teams had won 3 bronze medals and had 1 fourth place finish in the first 4 years at OFSAA. In the 1989-90 school year, CKSS won their pool without losing a game and then met what proved to be their toughest opponent, Alliston Banting, in the quarterfinals. CK won that match 15-11, 16-14. They then swept Ottawa Carleton 15-10, 15-1 in the semi finals and North Bay Widdifield 15-11, 15-8 in the finals. This was the first Chatham volleyball team to win OFSAA at a level higher than “A”. Their overall game record was 94-23. With 9 players back the next year, CKSS went on to win gold again and then made it 3 golds in a row the following year as 5 players played on all 3 championship teams. Since this OFSAA championship, Chatham has become a dominate force in volleyball in the province. Team members were Jake Birch, Rhian Bohunicky, Kevin Butcher, Earl Grant, Aaron Hamilton, Todd Johnston, Darby Kalp, Colin Pittuck, Mark Service, Mike Service, Jeff Siddall, Jon Teetzel, Wayne Wright, Dale Lahey (head coach), Randy Bartlett (assistant coach), and Leigh Edwards (manager).
