Chatham-Kent April Athlete of the Month: Bridget Carleton and Chad Laprise
Carleton won both the Kent and SWOSSAA badminton with John McGregor Panthers partner Ashley Herfst, as well as other local tournaments, advancing to the OFSAA badminton championships.
As well, as a member of the London Ramblers JUEL basketball team, Carleton, who is in grade 11 at John McGregor led the Ramblers to a perfect 7-0 record in April. Carleton was dominant with the Ramblers in those games, averaging 22.2 points per game, and 9.4 rebounds per game.
As the calendar flipped to May, Carleton was participating at OFSAA, and announced her commitment to play NCAA Division I basketball for the Big 12’s Iowa State University Cyclones.
Laprise won The Ultimate Fighter Nations title, earning a contract in the UFC. He capped off his performance on the MMA series by efeating Olivier Aubin-Mercier by a split decision in the finale.
Laprise also earned Fight of the Season, and Performance of the Season honours from The Ultimate Fighter.
Carleton and Laprise were separated by only 0.04% in the final voting, earning a total of approximately 24% of the vote each.
Runner Up:
Thamesville’s Bailey Walker challenged the voting leaders, taking a close 21% of the vote after her spectacular performance for the UCC Lancers rugby team in April. Walker was named tournament MVP helping her Lancers win the UWO Rugby tournament, and led UCC in yardage gains through the first games of their Kent season.
