When the Belle River Canadiens roll into Chatham-Kent next winter, they’ll have a new look and a new name. Due to trademark issues, the team has rebranded and will now be known as the Lakeshore Canadiens.

The Canadiens, who have won 13 Great Lakes Junior C titles and four Clarence Schmalz Cups at Ontario champions since being established in 1978, will maintain their iconic red, white and blue jerseys.

The logo, however, will no longer have the stylized C due to trademark issues associated with the Montreal Canadiens. Also, the full team name will be the Lakeshore Canadiens, which corresponds with the teams move into the newly constructed Lakeshore Community Recreation Complex.

“We are excited to welcome the Town of Lakeshore into the Canadiens family,” says Canadiens co-owner John Savage said. “Belle River has been and will continue to be an important part of the Canadiens organization.”

A legal issue, raised by the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens, necessitated the change. The NHL club challenged that the stylized C logo, worn in Belle River since the team’s inception in 1978, infringes their trademark rights.

As such, a new logo was needed. With the move next season to our new, state-of-the-art $57 million home on Renaud Line in Lakeshore, the timing was right to make the change.

“This isn’t about leaving behind the tremendous history of this franchise,” Savage said. “The Canadiens enjoyed considerable success and support in Belle River and we hope to continue that in Lakeshore, building off a great run last season.”
